Rajiv Gandhi (The former prime minister of India,) was murdered by a female suicide bomber named Dhanu on 21 May 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi was campaigning for elections in the southern state of Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The LTTE ( Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam group from Sri Lanka) suicide bomber Murugan met him at a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur.
Nalini was the only leftover out of the 5-person squad. S Haribabu, who was a local photographer, was murdered in the explosion along with the rest of the suspects, and his clicked photos helped prove her guilt.
Murugan (an LTTE operator) was convicted and arrested a month after the murder and sentenced to death. Nalini Sriharan was a close helper of Murugan.
After Congress politician and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s widow Sonia Gandhi fought for mercy in 2000 on behalf of Nalini’s daughter, who was born in jail, Nalini’s death sentence was reduced to life in prison.

Supreme Court Freed Nalini Sriharan From Life Imprisonment
Nalini Sriharan and 5 more sentenced in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case have been freed by the Supreme Court after spending 31 years in jail.
In May, the Supreme Court used its exceptional powers to free a 7th convict, Perarivalan. The same system applied to the rest of the convicts, the court said.
Besides Nalini Sriharan, the others 5 jailed for the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were Santhan, Robert Payas, Murugan, and RP Ravichandran.
The sentence of 6 more convicts was also reduced in 2014. The same year J Jayalalitha (then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister) takes action and moved to free them.
